UMS wins seven medals in “Green house concept of solar drier for drying seaweed”.

UMS wins seven medals in  Germany  

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) won a total of seven medals, three gold, three silver, and one bronze, at the just concluded International Trade Fair Ideas Inventions New Product (IENA) 2012, in Nuremberg, Germany.  According to UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd. Harun Abdullah, this was the second time the university took part in IENA.  “This is a remarkable achievement because we competed with many researchers from leading international universities,” he said in a statement, yesterday.  UMS professor Dr Suhami Mohd Yasir won the first gold medal through his innovation, “Green house concept of solar drier for drying seaweed”. The other two gold medals were won by Dr Patricia Matanjun and Associate Prof Dr Charles Vairappan through their products and innovations, “NaTea-Sabah mixture of herbal tea and mint green seaweed Pennywort”, and “Degradable biopolymer bacteria from marine sponge”, respectively.  Patricia’s other research and innovation, “Noval algea derived anti-inflammation drugs” also won a silver medal, while Associate Prof Dr Chye Fook Yee won two silver medals through his research and innovations .  UMS Research and Innovation Management Centre director, Associate Prof Dr Filex Tongkul said most of the products that were developed through these research and innovations were in the process of commercialization.  “This will directly contribute to the income of UMS and researchers as well as to the local communities,” Felix added.
